Q&A with Rachel Forbes

Tell us more about why you write

I find it calming to put pen to paper, and I'm often found scribbling down ideas... sometimes in the middle of the night! Most of my ideas go nowhere - but some, like this picture book, make it the distance.

I love stories because they help us say things that are hard to say plainly. They let us explore lots of tricky concepts in ways that feels safe. Especially for children.

Writing helps me make sense of the world. I notice little moments, odd characters, funny details, places with history, and feelings that don’t always have easy words. Stories give those things somewhere to go.

At the centre of my writing is a simple question: What if this story helped someone feel a little braver, a little less alone, or a little more able to see the good in themselves?

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by everything! Writing helps me to pay attention to the world me. When I am present, I am more likely to notice the small things that make every day special. In this way, I've learned that the seemingly ordinary places hide extraordinary stories, and I love uncovering exciting things in unlikely places.

I love to read, and I want to cultivate that love and see it grow in my community, and in communities around the world. Stories can inspire us. They can teach us to feel and help us understand different perspectives. Stories can make a difference - not just to individual people, but to whole communities.

What does the future hold?

More picture books! I have caught the children's picture book bug. There will be another book about the two little ghosts. I'm going to be working with a local school to create the story, and am running a competition for a local child to feature in the book! I am very excited for what we will create.
